Arachne was a maiden who become famous throughout Greece, though she was neither noble nor beautiful and come from no great city. She lived in a little village, and her father was a humble dyer of wool. He could make a various color of wool and those are so perfectly beautiful. No one had ever seen those wool ever before. He has a daughter who was much better in spinning and making the wool into much better cloth. Her name, Arachne. But she was so boastful and too arrogant for her hand made.
She said, "with my own 10 fingers, I gained this skill, and by hard practice, from early morning till night. I never had time to stand looking, as you people do, while another maiden worked. Nor if i had, I would never give Athene credit, because the girl has more skillful than I. As for Athene's weaving, how could there be finer cloth or more beautiful embroidery than mine??? If Athene herself were to come down and compete with me, she could do no better than I."
When an old poor woman hear about this, she said, "Rackless gurl." But Arachne replied, "Stupid Woman!!!" Woohooo what such an attitude.
Then Athene come down from her throne and a little bit angry to Arachne, but she said, "let us have a competition."
And arachne surely replied that she is available.
By the time Athene start to spin the wheel and made some pattern, Arachne also continue her creative job.
But when they almost finished, Athene was really angry. She can beat her and do her magic supernatural power and change Arachne to become a very tiny creature. At that time people called her spider, come from the word spin. And until now as we see, spider always aside her home by spinning her own threat.
